Google Treated Them Completely Differently.

An ongoing real-world Google indexing case study from AnchorPoint Ventures.

The Experiment

AnchorPoint Ventures operates websites in very different industries. That gives us a live environment for applying many of the same technical and SEO principles across multiple properties and observing what Google actually does.

The result has been striking: six websites, one operator, many of the same underlying SEO practices—and dramatically different Google behavior.

Six Websites, Six Different Outcomes

If you spend enough time reading SEO advice, getting a website indexed by Google can sound almost mechanical.

Create useful original content. Build a logical site structure. Make pages crawlable. Use internal links. Submit a sitemap. Connect Google Search Console. Add appropriate structured data. Earn credible mentions and links. Give Google time to discover and evaluate the site.

We've done those things across several websites.

The results have been anything but consistent.

These measurements do not exist in isolation. Several of these properties have also accumulated independent third-party references, media coverage, and expert citations. We track those signals separately because media recognition is not the same thing as search performance, but it provides another point of comparison when evaluating how search engines and AI systems respond to external authority signals.

These are not identical websites, so this is not a controlled scientific experiment. They cover different subjects. Their sizes, ages, content models, and competitive environments differ.

But they share an important variable: the same operator is involved in their development and much of their technical and SEO strategy.

Google has treated them remarkably differently.

We do not yet know exactly why.

That is what makes the comparison worth documenting.

GetCruiseInfo: The Site We Expected to Perform Better

GetCruiseInfo.com launched in November 2025 as an independent cruise-planning resource.

Over time, it developed into a substantial website containing cruise-line and ship information, destination guides, planning resources, calculators, package comparisons, cruise reviews, and other content.

From an indexing perspective, however, the history has been frustrating.

At one point early in 2026, Google Search Console showed 63 indexed pages. By April, that number had fallen dramatically.

On August 6, 2026, Search Console reported approximately 359 known pages but only one indexed page, while another 105 URLs were classified as “Crawled – currently not indexed.”

Those numbers made it difficult to explain the problem as simply “Google hasn't discovered the website yet.”

Google knew about substantial portions of the site. It simply wasn't choosing to index many of them.

We Added Something That Should Be Difficult to Replicate

One hypothesis worth testing was whether too much of the site resembled information available elsewhere in the cruise industry.

So we increasingly emphasized something that cannot simply be copied from a cruise line's website:

Firsthand experience.

After sailing Alaska aboard Norwegian Encore in August 2026, we created original pages based on actual experiences in Glacier Bay, Juneau, Ketchikan, the White Pass and Yukon, and aboard the ship itself.

These were not destination summaries assembled from tourism websites.

They incorporated observations from the trip, original photographs and video, specific recommendations, things that surprised us, things we would do differently, and details that came from physically being there.

We then placed several of those pages into a dedicated priority sitemap and submitted them to Google.

As of our September 2026 observation period, those pages had not produced the indexing response we hoped to see.

That is important evidence.

It does not mean firsthand content does not matter. It means firsthand content alone did not immediately solve this site's indexing problem.

External Authority Did Not Magically Fix It Either

GetCruiseInfo also developed something our newer properties did not initially have: external media recognition.

I have also provided travel expertise to national and industry publications including Reuters, Southern Living, TravelAge West, TravelPulse, FinanceBuzz, MoneyLion, and others.

That matters to this case study because I am not evaluating GetCruiseInfo from the outside. I am the travel advisor behind the site, I create much of its firsthand content, and I have been directly involved in its development, technical changes, editorial outreach, and indexing work.

Some coverage identifies or references GetCruiseInfo.

That is useful for credibility and brand development. But another lesson emerged:

External authority signals do not create an indexing guarantee either.

The site's indexing difficulties persisted while those signals accumulated.

Again, we have to be careful about what this proves. It does not establish that media mentions or backlinks are irrelevant. It establishes only that they were not sufficient, by themselves, to reverse the pattern we were observing.

Domain History May Matter — But It Clearly Isn't the Whole Story

GetCruiseInfo is not the only property in this case study with a previous life.

Although the current GetCruiseInfo website launched in November 2025, the domain itself existed years earlier under previous ownership and was in use until approximately 2015. The current site therefore inherited a domain history and backlink profile that we did not create.

As we investigated that earlier history, we found enough questionable historical linking activity to raise a legitimate concern about portions of the old backlink profile. We submitted a disavow file to Google for links we believed should not be associated with the current site.

But Chapter7Reset.com also has a history that predates the current website. Wayback Machine records show the domain being used by a small legal firm as recently as July 11, 2025. The current Chapter7Reset website is unrelated to that earlier use.

ApartmentMovingHelp.com gives us a third historical-domain comparison. Wayback Machine records show a previous version of that domain remaining online through approximately 2021, years before AnchorPoint launched the current apartment-moving resource.

As of September 2026, Google Search Console showed 16 ApartmentMovingHelp.com URLs indexed. The additional URLs reported as “Discovered – currently not indexed” were not legitimate current-site pages. They contained an old hosting filesystem path—such as /data/.../htdocs/moving/—that had been exposed during early server-path configuration issues. Those malformed URLs do not represent actual pages from the current website.

Based on the current Search Console evidence, all known legitimate pages from the current ApartmentMovingHelp site appear to be indexed. That makes the comparison considerably more interesting: Google is indexing the rebuilt site despite the domain's unrelated prior history.

GetCruiseInfo, Chapter7Reset, and ApartmentMovingHelp were all built on previously used domains, yet Google has treated their current websites very differently.

GetCruiseInfo inherited a much older history and a backlink profile that raised enough concerns for us to submit a disavow file. Chapter7Reset had a more recent previous use, yet all nine of its primary pages were indexed by August 2026 and its subsequent media page was indexed relatively quickly. ApartmentMovingHelp had an earlier website through approximately 2021, yet all known legitimate pages from the rebuilt property currently appear to be indexed.

So prior domain use by itself cannot explain the difference we are observing.

A more precise question is whether the nature of an inherited domain's history—including its prior use, backlink profile, historical content, and other accumulated signals—can influence how Google evaluates a completely different website later built on that domain.

We do not know.

The disavow is important context, but it is not proof that GetCruiseInfo's historical backlinks caused its indexing difficulties. Nor does Chapter7Reset's strong indexing prove that prior domain use is irrelevant.

What the comparison does show is that “previously used domain” is too simple an explanation. If inherited history is contributing to GetCruiseInfo's behavior, something more specific about that history may matter.

We Investigated the Technical Side

Separately from the inherited domain history, we have also worked through the obvious technical explanations and structural issues on the current GetCruiseInfo website.

Among other things, we:

Some pages have appeared in Google.

Many have not.

This was not a case where we found one accidental noindex directive, removed it, and watched the problem disappear.

The resistance persisted.

And then other AnchorPoint properties gave us very different results.

Chapter7Reset: Smaller Site, Very Different Outcome

Chapter7Reset.com is a much smaller property focused on rebuilding financially after Chapter 7 bankruptcy.

Its content is strongly grounded in firsthand experience.

The domain itself was not new, however. Wayback Machine records show Chapter7Reset.com being used by a small legal firm as recently as July 11, 2025, before the current financial-recovery site was created.

Instead of treating bankruptcy solely as an abstract financial topic, the site documents what rebuilding actually looked like after a real Chapter 7 case, including the progression from the early stages of rebuilding credit through later financial milestones.

It does not have hundreds of pages. It has not existed as long as GetCruiseInfo. It does not have the same volume of travel-industry media references.

Yet Google's behavior was dramatically different.

By August 20, 2026, all nine of its primary pages were indexed.

When we subsequently created a /media/ section, that page was also indexed relatively quickly.

That gave us an obvious question:

Why was Google readily accepting pages from this small property while resisting large portions of GetCruiseInfo?

We can come up with plenty of hypotheses.

At this point, we do not have sufficient evidence to identify one of them as the explanation.

So we will not pretend that we do.

ApartmentMovingHelp: A Third Historical-Domain Comparison

ApartmentMovingHelp.com adds another useful comparison because, like GetCruiseInfo and Chapter7Reset, the domain had a previous life before the current website.

Historical Wayback Machine records show a previous version of the domain through approximately 2021. AnchorPoint launched the current apartment-moving resource in January 2026.

Google's current treatment of the site is notably different from GetCruiseInfo.

As of September 2026, Google Search Console showed 16 legitimate ApartmentMovingHelp URLs indexed. It also reported 16 URLs as “Discovered – currently not indexed,” but closer inspection showed that those URLs contained an old hosting filesystem path—/data/.../htdocs/moving/—that had been exposed during early server-path configuration problems. They are not actual pages on the current website and show no crawl date.

That distinction matters.

All known legitimate pages from the current ApartmentMovingHelp website appear to be indexed.

ApartmentMovingHelp therefore provides a particularly useful counterexample to GetCruiseInfo. Both domains had prior lives, but the rebuilt ApartmentMovingHelp site is being indexed normally while GetCruiseInfo continues to experience widespread resistance across legitimate deep URLs.

The distinction now extends beyond indexing. By September 2026, Google was also using ApartmentMovingHelp in AI-generated search results, describing the site's purpose, identifying its apartment-moving guides, local-mover resources, and custom quote functionality, and citing individual internal pages. Google search results were also surfacing third-party social references to ApartmentMovingHelp resources.

Google was not merely indexing the rebuilt ApartmentMovingHelp domain. It was also demonstrating a broader understanding of the site's topical purpose, content structure, and external references.

Together, the three historical-domain properties make a simple explanation increasingly difficult to defend. Prior use alone does not appear sufficient to produce the behavior seen on GetCruiseInfo.

If inherited history is contributing to GetCruiseInfo's indexing difficulties, the evidence increasingly points toward something more specific about that history—or toward an interaction between domain history and other signals—rather than the mere fact that the domain existed before the current website.

GroupBenefitsHub: When Google's Own Systems Disagree

GroupBenefitsHub.com adds a different kind of comparison to this case study.

As of September 2026, Google Search Console reported 14 known URLs and zero indexed pages. Every one of those 14 URLs was classified as “Crawled – currently not indexed.” None remained in “Discovered – currently not indexed.”

The crawl dates are also notable. Google last crawled the homepage on March 10, most of the site's Texas employee-benefits and health-insurance pages on March 29, the individual-insurance section on April 15, and the Texas IUL section on February 22.

In other words, Google discovered and crawled the small site, declined to retain its known pages in the reported web index, and then showed very little subsequent crawl activity across those URLs.

If Search Console were our only measurement system, that would make GroupBenefitsHub look almost completely invisible.

It is not.

Bing Webmaster Tools shows the site receiving organic search impressions and clicks. More strikingly, Microsoft's AI Performance reporting shows approximately 1,300 citations over the most recent six-month period across Microsoft Copilot and partner experiences.

The Microsoft AI reporting also shows an average of approximately one cited page, indicating that this visibility appears to be concentrated rather than distributed evenly across the site.

Then we found an even more unusual signal: Google's own AI-generated search experience was citing GroupBenefitsHub.

In a Google AI-generated answer, Google described GroupBenefitsHub as an educational resource for small and mid-sized U.S. business owners, HR professionals, and decision-makers navigating employer-sponsored health insurance and employee benefits. The response identified specific areas covered by the site—including employer-sponsored plans, regulatory compliance, and small-business benefit strategies—and displayed GroupBenefitsHub citations throughout the answer.

The accompanying source panel also surfaced a GroupBenefitsHub page titled “Group Benefits Explained for Employers.”

At the same time Search Console reports zero of 14 known GroupBenefitsHub pages indexed, Google's own AI-generated results can still identify the site's purpose, summarize its subject matter, and cite it as a source.

That distinction matters. “Not indexed” in Search Console does not necessarily mean that every Google retrieval or AI system is unable to discover, understand, or use information from a website.

It also means the disagreement is no longer simply Google versus Microsoft. In this case, different Google surfaces themselves appear to be giving us different signals: Search Console reports no indexed pages while Google's AI-generated search experience can still surface and cite the domain.

We should be careful about what this proves. It does not establish that Search Console is inaccurate, that the 14 URLs belong in Google's traditional web index, or that AI citation and conventional indexing use identical retrieval systems. Nor does Microsoft's citation activity prove that every GroupBenefitsHub page deserves to be indexed.

What it does establish observationally is that conventional Google indexing status is not the whole visibility story.

The site also provides a useful contrast with GetCruiseInfo. Both have experienced widespread post-crawl exclusion, but their current crawl patterns differ. Google has recently been returning to GetCruiseInfo with increased crawl activity, while the GroupBenefitsHub URLs reported in Search Console have not recorded a crawl since April 15, 2026.

On September 9, we started Search Console's Validate Fix process for the GroupBenefitsHub “Crawled – currently not indexed” issue without first changing the site's content or structure. We are intentionally leaving the site unchanged while that validation runs so we can observe whether Google returns to crawl the URLs and whether any indexing status changes occur without another round of site modifications.

For now, GroupBenefitsHub is therefore both a visibility comparison and a live indexing experiment.

Then We Launched Freedom Built

In September 2026, AnchorPoint Ventures began building a website for Freedom Built Business Solutions, an operations and process optimization consulting business.

This provided another useful comparison:

A brand-new domain and website.

There was no large legacy architecture. There were not hundreds of historical URLs. There was no established crawling pattern we needed to overcome.

We could build a focused small-business website from scratch using lessons learned from operating the other properties.

We established a straightforward architecture around the company and its services. We implemented canonical URLs and metadata. We created internal navigation. We connected Google Search Console and analytics. We submitted the site for discovery.

And then we watched.

Google began discovering and indexing pages remarkably quickly.

Not merely the homepage. Internal pages began appearing as well.

That does not make Freedom Built an “SEO success story.” It is far too early to make that claim.

Indexing is not ranking. Ranking is not traffic. Traffic is not conversion.

But for this particular case study, the indexing behavior matters.

A brand-new website was receiving a very different initial response from Google than the response we had been fighting on GetCruiseInfo.

AnchorPoint Ventures: Another Outcome

The AnchorPoint Ventures website provides a fourth comparison—and a somewhat different kind of evidence.

AnchorPointVenturesLLC.com is the consulting business behind this case study. We use the site to explain our SEO consulting, technical SEO, search authority, AI visibility, editorial work, and the experiments we conduct across our properties.

Google has indexed pages from the site while also beginning to associate AnchorPoint Ventures with increasingly specific SEO-related topics and queries.

That matters because the observation is no longer limited to whether a URL enters Google's index.

With AnchorPoint Ventures, we can also observe how Google develops an understanding of what a business is about.

As the site has developed—and as third-party editorial references and other external signals have accumulated—we have observed AnchorPoint Ventures becoming associated with SEO consulting, technical SEO, search authority, AI visibility, and related concepts.

We should not overstate what that proves. We cannot isolate which individual pages, links, mentions, structural changes, or other signals caused those associations.

But it gives this case study another useful outcome: a business website where we can observe both indexing and the gradual formation of topical and entity-level associations around the company.

Same Operator. Similar Principles. Different Outcomes.

This is where the comparison becomes useful.

Across these properties we generally care about:

Yet the indexing outcomes have not been remotely identical.

That has changed the way we think about SEO.

SEO Is Not a Checklist

It is tempting to turn observations like these into universal rules.

We could declare that smaller websites index better. Our evidence does not establish that.

We could conclude that firsthand experience guarantees indexing. GetCruiseInfo demonstrates that it does not.

We could claim that backlinks or media mentions solve indexing problems. They have not solved ours.

We could say that submitting a sitemap gets pages indexed. It does not. A sitemap helps search engines discover and understand URLs. Google still decides whether those URLs belong in its index.

We could blame the travel niche. Competition and widespread duplication of basic cruise information may contribute to what we are seeing, but we do not currently have evidence strong enough to establish that as the cause.

This is where SEO becomes uncomfortable.

Many things described as “SEO best practices” are better understood as conditions that improve the probability of a desired outcome. They are not commands Google is obligated to follow.

You can make a page crawlable. You can make its purpose clear. You can provide original information. You can connect it internally. You can submit it through Search Console. You can earn outside references. You can demonstrate firsthand experience.

And Google can still decide not to index it.

The Difference Between Testing and Tinkering

GetCruiseInfo has taught us another lesson that may ultimately be more valuable than discovering the cause of its indexing problem.

When something is not working, there is tremendous pressure to keep changing things.

Then wait three days and change something else.

Eventually, you have changed so many variables that even if performance improves, you do not know what caused it.

Activity can feel like progress when it isn't.

We have become increasingly reluctant to make changes simply because there is something available to change.

Sometimes the correct next step is a deliberate modification followed by measurement.

Sometimes it is collecting more evidence.

And sometimes the correct SEO strategy is simply:

Wait.

That is difficult advice to give a client.

It is even harder when it is your own website.

But experimentation without an observation period is not much of an experiment.

What We're Watching Now

This case study is not finished.

That is intentional.

For GetCruiseInfo, we are watching whether Google's treatment changes following recent structural improvements, stronger internal discovery paths, new firsthand-experience pages, and continuing external authority development.

For Chapter7Reset, we are watching whether its strong indexing rate continues as the site grows, particularly because it provides a useful counterexample to the idea that prior domain use alone creates indexing resistance.

For ApartmentMovingHelp, we are watching whether that strong indexing pattern and Google's emerging AI-search understanding continue as the site grows. Its current result is especially useful because it is another repurposed domain, yet all known legitimate pages from the rebuilt site appear to be indexed, individual resources are appearing in Google's AI-generated answers, and third-party references are surfacing alongside the site's own pages. The malformed server-path URLs still reported by Search Console are historical artifacts rather than current content being rejected by Google.

For GroupBenefitsHub, we started Search Console's Validate Fix process on September 9 without changing the site first. We are watching whether Google returns to recrawl the 14 known URLs, whether any pages return to the conventional index, and whether Bing, Microsoft AI, and Google's own AI-generated search results continue surfacing the site while Search Console reports zero indexed pages.

Freedom Built provides a different comparison: a small, focused business website built from scratch using what we have learned from operating the others.

For AnchorPoint Ventures, we are watching both indexing and whether Google's topical associations with the company continue to broaden and strengthen as the site and its external authority signals develop.

We are recording what happens next.

If GetCruiseInfo suddenly begins indexing substantially more pages, we will document it.

If it does not, we will document that too.

If one of our current hypotheses survives the evidence, we will explain why.

And if the evidence disproves something we previously believed about SEO, that may be even more valuable.

Why AnchorPoint Operates Its Own Websites

There is a reason AnchorPoint Ventures operates independent web properties.

We do not want client websites to be the laboratory where we first discover whether an idea works.

Our own properties give us somewhere to test.

Sometimes those experiments produce growth.

Sometimes they produce frustrating results.

Both teach us something.

And the experience of these six websites has reinforced one principle more than anything else:

SEO should be treated as an evidence-driven process, not a collection of guarantees.

There are sound technical practices. There are strong content principles. There are ways to make websites easier for search engines and people to understand. There are legitimate ways to build authority.

We should absolutely do those things.

But anyone who tells a business owner that following an SEO checklist guarantees Google will index or rank a website is promising something they do not control.

Neither do we.

What we can control is the quality of the websites we build, the evidence we collect, the experiments we conduct, and how intelligently we respond to the results.

Right now, six websites are giving us six different sets of evidence.

We're paying attention.
